Note:
This report reflects wheat that was planted in the fall of 2000/early winter 2001
for harvest in spring/summer of 2001.
2001 Wheat
Variety Survey
California's estimated wheat plantings for the 2001 harvest year were comparable to the previous year's estimate of acreage. Although dry fall conditions affected some plantings,
winter rains have provided generally favorable growing conditions in most areas; the most notable exception being the continued drought conditions in far northern California. This area is also experiencing irrigation problems which have seriously affected the planting of spring wheat. Consequently, the Sierra and No. Calif. region of the survey showed the largest percentage reduction in estimated plantings.
CALIFORNIA'S RED AND WHITE WHEATS:
The red wheat varieties Brooks, Bonus, Express, and Yecora Rojo accounted for over 70% of the total non-Durum wheat plantings. Reports from seed dealers indicate that red wheat acreage is up over ~25% in Sacramento Valley. Bonus and Stander varieties tripled and doubled, respectively, in acreage over last year. Some of this acreage replaced RSI-5 acreage, which was
not marketed due to rust problems. Anza/Yolo varities also showed an increase in the Sacramento Valley, while Express acreage remained constant and popular from the Stockton/Tracy area of the San Joaquin Valley north through the Sacramento Valley. In the San Joaquin Valley, the biggest change in acreage was seen with the variety Bonus, again likely replacing much of the RSI-5 acreage. Bonus is used for grain and non-grain purposes in the SJV. Yecora Rojo is the dominant red variety planted in Southern California, however it had a steep drop-off in acreage
in the
Klamath Basin/Tulelake regions due to the drought/irrigation problems there.
White wheat acreage in the
Klamath Basin and Tulelake regions was also affected by the drought/irrigation problems
. Dirkwin, typically grown for non-grain uses in the San Joaquin Valley and coastal regions, was produced on approximately 19,000 acres. Klasic, a hard white milling wheat, was planted on approximately 15,000 acres in the SJV and coastal areas.
DESERT DURUM®:
Kronos continues to be the predominant Desert Durum® variety grown in California, accounting for almost 70% of the acreage. New varieties being planted include Bravadur and
YU 895-89.
