Note: This report reflects wheat that was planted in the fall of 2001/early winter 2002 for harvest in spring/summer of 2002.

2002 Wheat Variety Survey

California's total estimated wheat plantings for the 2002 harvest year are slightly lower than the previous year's estimate of acreage with an approximate 6% overall reduction in red/white wheat and an approximate 12% increase in Durum acreage. The growing season was generally characterized by a wet December/early January, followed by a long period of sub-freezing weather and a dry March. Southern California had virtually no rain and was colder than usual over the winter.

CALIFORNIA'S RED AND WHITE WHEATS:
Reports from seed dealers indicated that wheat acreage is down approximately 15-20% in the Sacramento Valley. In the San Joaquin Valley, a greater proportion of non-Durum acreage is being used for green chop/forage for the dairy industry. Virtually all varieties in this region have some proportion of their acreage used for non-grain purposes. The red wheat varieties Brooks, Bonus, Express, and Yecora Rojo accounted for approximately 70% of the total non-Durum wheat plantings. Summit, Bonus, and Stander have replaced RSI-5 acreage of a couple of years ago.

Two new hard white wheat varieties, Plata (Sacramento Valley) and Blanca Grande (San Joaquin Valley) entered the scene this year. Dirkwin, typically grown for non-grain uses in the San Joaquin Valley and coastal regions, was produced on approximately 22,000 acres, including some acreage in northern California. Klasic, a hard white milling wheat, was planted on approximately 12,000 acres in the San Joaquin Valley and coastal areas.

DESERT DURUM®:
Over half of the Desert Durum® acreage continues to be grown in Southern CA, however durum acreage in the San Joaquin Valley increased almost 25% over last year. Kronos continues to be the predominant Desert Durum® variety grown in both regions. The variety Orita was known last year as YU 895-89.
