Taiwan millers to formally
commit to U.S. HW purchase
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
Next week, the Taiwan Flour Mills Association (TFMA)
will sign a letter of intent in Washington, D.C., that specifies a commitment to
buy 1.7 MMT of U.S. wheat over two years, including 60 TMT of hard white wheat
(HW) in 2008 and 90 TMT of HW in 2009.
A Taiwan Agricultural Goodwill Mission including TFMA representatives will spend
two weeks in the U.S. beginning June 4 to make formal commitments to import
several U.S. commodities and to celebrate its long-term, productive trade
relationship with American agriculture.
“We are proud to welcome these faithful customers back to the U.S.,” says Vince
Peterson, USW Vice President of Overseas Operations. “We are especially pleased
that for the first time, they are making a very specific commitment to hard
white wheat.” TFMA recently purchased about 7 TMT of HW as part of tenders to
buy a total of 82 TMT of U.S. wheat. “That reflects the excellent quality of
U.S. HW and some hard work by Country Director Ronald Lu and other USW
colleagues,” Peterson added.
Taiwan has purchased an average of almost 1 MMT of U.S. wheat per year for many
years. In the current marketing year, Taiwan is ranked seventh among U.S. wheat
importers.
TFMA and a USW representative for U.S. wheat producers will sign the letters of
intent in a ceremony on Capitol Hill June 7. The Taiwan Agricultural Goodwill
Mission wheat team will then travel to South Dakota, Idaho, Montana and Oregon
for similar events and U.S. wheat industry visits.
