1st Detection of Wheat Stripe Rust in California for 2004The California Wheat Commission recently received the following comments from Lee Jackson, Extension Agronomist at the University of California, Davis. We will keep this site updated as more information becomes available. "I detected wheat stripe rust on February 12 in the UC Regional Wheat nursery, Victoria Island Farms, Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta (about 15 mi west of Stockton). Crop stage was early joint (planting date, 11/17). I found infections in about 12 plots scattered throughout the nursery; border rows (suscept line D6301) and each plot of Cavalier were diseased, as well as single plots of several other entries. Infection was light (less than 1% incidence), but pustules on infected plants were sporulating profusely. Infected leaves had up to 30% severity. This is my first observation of stripe rust for 2004. Monitor fields in your areas closely now and let me know if you see stripe rust developing." |
