Update on Wheat Stripe Rust from the University of California

The following was reported by U.C. Extension Agronomist Lee Jackson on 3/4/04:

Wheat stripe rust has increased at the UC Regional Wheat nursery, Victoria Island Farms, Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta (15 mi west of Stockton) from the last report on Feb 12. The crop now is at late jointing stage. Suscept line D6301 has severity approaching 50% on lower leaves and incidence of 20%. Susceptible varieties and breeding lines in the nursery, including Yecora Rojo and Cavalier, have severities up to 30% and incidences of up to10%.

I detected trace to 10% severities in the UC Regional Wheat nursery in Madera County on March 3. The crop there is in early jointing stage.

I also detected trace levels of wheat stripe rust on the suscept line D6301in the stripe rust screening nursery at UC Davis on February 27 (nursery is in the jointing stage) and trace levels of barley stripe rust on the suscept line Max in the barley stripe rust screening nursery at UC Davis on February 23 (late tillering stage). As of March 4, the infections have not increased to much more than trace levels at UC Davis.
